Eugene Smith’s estate prohibits online reproduction of his photography. “Don’t expect,” wrote photographer W Eugene Smith, “a point-by-point hand-led tour. What interested the artist was to fathom and make visible the essence of human existence through fragments of reality that through the filter of his gaze and his objective became symbolic images, universal archetypes of the inconsistencies and yearnings of modernity. But once he started, he couldn’t stop. For several decades, two generations of ethically and socially engaged photographers, such as Lewis Hine, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, fathomed in their shots the soul of an era, sensing its conflicts, contradictions and enthusiasm. “Pittsburgh was proud of itself, for the strides it had made against pollution,” Smith recalled in 1977, “That’s the reason why I photographed it with all the smoke — because men’s miracles are seldom perfect, and they were calling the salvation of Pittsburgh ‘a miracle.’”. Some of his most famous reportages date back to that period, such as The Country Doctor, which tells the daily life of the doctor Robert Ceriani, Nurse midwife dedicated to the work of a black woman from the deep south or Spanish Village realized in Deleitosa in Extremadura that describes the life of the most marginalized social strata during the Francoist dictatorship. Curious and attentive to the becoming of the contemporary, she believes in the power of art to make life more interesting and she loves to explore its latest trends through dialogue with artists, curators and gallery owners. After two years of fierce dedication that caused the collapse of his finances and irreparable disagreements with his wife and children who left him alone, he was forced to declare himself defeated, to surrender to the impossibility of grasping an ever-elusive totality in an inexhaustible sequence of specificity specimens. W. Eugene Smith, considered by many to be one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, arrived in Pittsburgh in March 1955 in a big green station wagon. By the end of 1954, he probably was the most widely-known and highly regarded photojournalist in the United States, by virtue of years of work for "Life". Smith was 36 years old and one of America’s preeminent photojournalists. His Pittsburgh project more than any other shows how obsessive and inflexible he was.
