tendency towards new age, green, environmentally sensitive other worlds, an ending that is not an ending...I never thought I'd read a Disney book that quoted Fanon on the cleansing power of violence. In near-future Nigeria, after a half-cataclysmic, half-utopian change that's merging Earth with fairy worlds (including Gimen, the setting of Nnedi Okorafor is a Nigerian-American author of African-based science fiction and fantasy (Africanfuturism and Africanjujuism).

Ultimately, however, I felt that the plot and characters fell a bit short, and the dialogue was rather stilted, which is why it only gets three stars; but it's worth a read for the sheer brilliance and wonder of the setting. The world this book creates is fantastic. I am so torn over this book. With a newfound friend by her side, Ejii comes face to face with an earth turned inside out -- and with her own magical powers. But Ejii soon discovers that her travels across the sands of the Sahara have a greater purpose. I kind of want to fight people giving it bad reviews. I could barely convince myself to put it down to pee (spoiler alert, I didn't, I took it with me.) [ Okay I will say: having the 'Villain' (insofar as you can point to one characters as one in this book) be Fat, even with the explanation as to why, was a little gross honestly? The people and the places in the Shadow Speaker all feel so real. On her path to Jaa, she continues to confront her past and her present, though she's never quite sure whether she's feeling the Call--which is arguably one of the most interesting discussWhat an amazing book. However, the imaginative elements were occasionally a little too bizarre for my tastes, and the reasons for the changes weren't always well-eThe Shadow Speaker is a richly imagined coming of age story with a theme of empowerment. It really set out to be, too.

I particularly liked that despite everything crazy and unforeseen in her journey, Ejii never waivers in her worldview or her faith. As I've said before their world is a future versian of ours where a bomb exploded and the radiation created this sort of super human people. Blue Sword is set in like the desert with nomads and stuff and Shadow Speaker is set in that kind of place too. I haven't read many books set in Niger and Nigeria, and I enjoyed learning about some folklore of those areas in this science fiction/fantasy story.

Not only was I intrigued by the fact that her stories of magical realism set in Africa (whether partially or wholly) but I was also excited by her featuring girls coming of age and into their own power. It is so densely packed and tightly written - truly an excellent set of world building. I discovered Nnedi Okorafor last year when I read her enchanting It is 2070, and life on Earth has been completely changed after a disastrous nuclear fallout earlier in the century: now in addition to technology, there is magic, and there are magical gateways to another world, Ginen (the world of It is 2070, and life on Earth has been completely changed after a disastrous nuclear fallout earlier in the century: now in addition to technology, there is magic, and there are magical gateways to another world, Ginen (the world of duuuuuuuuuuuuude. Nnedi also deals head-on with the fact that power and pain are closely linked, as are magic and blood. We’d love your help. Ejii is what they call a Shadow Speaker, she can speak to shadows. But what this book is about is a girl called Ejii. And Ejii may be just the hero to do it.“Spontaneous forests, polygamy, strange insects, Nigerian 419 scammers, really really fast cars, a different kind of Sahara Desert, male beauty contests, the apocalypse, life, death, sword fights, fat chiefs, assassins, this novel is full of life.”THE SHADOW SPEAKER is wonderful, highly original stuff, episode after amazing episode, full of color, life and death. Which isn't a criticism as such - it's good, solid writing, just not the kind of thing I swoon for. This full-length novel centers on Ejii, a 14-year-old Muslim Nigerian girl living in 2070. -RynUnforgettable people, creatures, worlds. I particularly love that Ejii doesn't seek to kill anyone, even those who have wronged her, and through coming to understand her specific powers she learns how to understand people and what makes them who they are. October 2nd 2007 Probably never. The shadows tell Ejii that she must go with Jaa to save the worlds. Like we don't need to use fatphobia to reinforce how bad this guy was. Look. I actually missed the begining of American Idol to finish it! Okorafor is also co-writing the screenplay of an adaptation of Octavia Butler’s Wild Seed with filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu for Amazon Prime Video, with Viola Davis producing. It actually reminded me of another book called The Blue Sword. She also h"I first picked up The Shadow Speaker because I have recently become an avid fan of Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu, recent Hugo award winner for her novella, Binti. The book's biggest strength is the characters: author Okorafor-Mbachu breathes life into a fascinating cast of characters. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. The Shadow Speaker blurs the boundaries between science-fiction and fantasy, allowing for imaginative technology and other-worldly beings and councils. Casting a Shadow: Ejii is a "Shadow Speaker", or someone who can talk to shadows. This full-length novel centers on Ejii, a 14-year-old Muslim Nigerian girl living in 2070.

There are other avenues. In an era of mind-blowing technology and seductive magic, Ejii embarks on a mystical journey to track down her father's killer. I found it to be quite different from Who Fears Death personally. This was so rich in detail and I am dying to dive straight into her first novel, Zahra the Windseeker (who are characters in this book!)

It should have been SO GOOD. Please consider doing a sequel! This book is pretty good.
